HR GIGER: happy birthday, mr. giger
iM STADTHAUS CHUR
13.11. – 27.11.2015

In 2015 HR Giger would have been able to celebrate his 75th birthday. The Bündner Kunstmuseum takes this opportunity to dedicate an exhibition at the Rathaus to the world-famous son of the city of Chur.

As one of the most important representatives of so-called Fantastic Figuration HR Giger (1940-2014) created a sensational and multifaceted oeuvre. Trained as both interior and industrial designer he understood how to transalte current fears and topics artistically as the return of the repressed, and thanks to this he holds an independent position. After the native of Chur in 1980 received an Oscar for the décor of the science fiction horror film Alien in the category of "Best Visual Effects" he became world-famous.

In the Rathaus the Bündner Kunstmuseum presents works by HR Giger from its own collection, the collection of the city of Chur as well as selected loans. The artistic spectrum ranges from early ink drawings to the nightmarish passages and the biomechanical figurations.

In addition there is a selection of record covers, which Giger created for different international music bands such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer or the singer Debbie Harry of Blondie, all of which have in the meantime become rock-graphic classics. Furthermore, integrated in the exhibition is the documentation Passagen by the Swiss film-maker Fredi M. Murer of 1972 which offers personal and revealing insights into the life and work of the artist.

On the occasion of the "Langen Samstag" the art museum also features a special programme within the exhibition.
